The Mighty Chest

St. Andrews boasts a magnificent chest. This massive Chest has pride of place in St. Andrews bell ringing chamber. The chest is of Oak and is hewn from one big tree and is over 1000 years old. In its heyday it had 3 locks the Vicar and the 2 Church Wardens would have been the keepers of the key’s, it would have taken all three of them not only to unlock the chest but to lift the extremely heavy lid to reveal all the church valuables. It has also been used as a resting place for the unfortunate souls that perished in the River Severn, laying them out on the top of the chest.
